Character Counts!
We started our school year off with Respect to get our students off and running. I started my lesson with an overview of what respect means to them.
Here are some quick definitions of Respect:
Respect means treating others fairly; follow the Golden Rule • Be tolerant and accepting of differences • Use good manners, not bad language • Be considerate of the feelings of others • Don’t threaten, hit or hurt anyone • Deal peacefully with anger, insults, and disagreements.
The students started the unit off with a superhero workshop, where they had to make choices that lead to different outcomes. We followed this up with a discussion on what it was like to make certain decisions when your classmates were against you. For the activity I had them create their own superhero shield (worksheet attached), complete with three separate rings that represented different answers to the following questions:
Super Power Shields:
1. In the first, outer ring, color it your favorite color.
2. In the second ring, color it the color of your favorite food.
3. In the center circle, color it the color of your eyes
In the star, draw a picture of yourself with a super power
They enjoyed this activity, I was impressed with the creativity that went into each drawing.
